Ales Lahvinets on election: I would withdraw anyway

Unregistered candidate Ales Lahvinets shared his impressions of the day at the polling station.

After the filth that the PECs did with people’s votes I’m glad I was not on the ballot papers. I would still have withdrawn.

What is your assessment of this day and would it be different if you were not thrown out of the race?

During the early voting in Minsk, we had carousel voting. Majority of Minskers did not go to vote, because they know that there is no real election. And that leaves us with hope. People do not want to be contaminated by the participation in another campaign of Lukashenka’s dictatorship legitimation.

Should we expect those who did not come to the stations to protest?

There is quite a large distance between the protest and distrust/dissatisfaction with the system. Belarusians still have not covered this distance.

Did you feel that people were willing to stand up to you to the end?

There is a problem with support still being rather passive. The reason for it is the fear and repression, and people do not believe that anything can be changed.
