Ahead of Victory Day: Belarusian female workers roping turf to Mound of Glory

In the run-up of Victory Day which Belarus celebrates on May 9, traveller Dzmitry who is visiting Hrodna has become an eyewitness to a curious incident.

At the moment, the municipal service is getting ready for the oncoming celebration. As thousands of people are expected to come to the Mound of Glory Plant on May, 9, it should look flawless…

According to Dzmitry, female workers were roping turf to the top of the Mound.

“We live in the XXI century, but Hrodna women have to pull turf bags. As far as I understand, they have no extra charge for it. They are women, it must be hard for them to do it,” Dzmitry told t-styl.info.

In their turn, the women find nothing queer or surprising in their fulfilling such a task.

„One should earn money – that is why we do it. Sometimes male co-workers help us. Everyone here is friendly, we usually line up behind each other. We had a similar case some years ago, when we were roping turf to the mount near the Bernardine Church. Then French people were visiting Hrodna; they were close to tears when they saw us working.”
