'Aggression against sovereign country'. Putin’s response to US strikes on Syria govt airbase

The US missile strike against Syria’s facilities was an act of aggression and impairs both Russian-US relations and the key goal of fighting international terrorism, Vladimir Putin believes.

“President Putin considers the US strikes against Syria an act of aggression against a sovereign country violating the norms of international law, and under a trumped-up pretext at that,” presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov stressed. According to him, the Syrian army had no stockpiles of chemical weapons.

Russia has suspended the Memorandum on preventing incidents and ensuring flights safety during operations in Syria earlier signed with the United States in the wake of the US strike on the Syrian airbase.

On Thursday, the U.S. launched a military strike on a Syrian government airbase in response to a chemical weapons attack that killed dozens of civilians earlier in the week. On president Donald Trump‘s orders, US warships launched 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles at the airbase that was home to the warplanes that carried out the chemical attacks, US officials said.

The cruise missiles brought down all the airplanes deployed at the Shayrat airbase, Russia’s state-controlled news agency RIA Novosti reports with reference to a person working at the airbase.

The United State warns Russia about their intention to launch a strike, Pentagon spokesman Jeff Davis says.
