“The Best Rural Household”, a contest which the Belarusian Republican Youth Union (BRSM) is holding is a part of republican project “The Village King 2012”. Its participants should send videos representing their households. Regional winners will contend for the title of the National Village King.
It is the Youtube channel visitors who are to decide winners. The latter will be awarded at the 2012 Dazhynki Festival in the town of Horki.
Despite regular state-owned TV reports indicating the highest level of agricultural settlements’ establishment, local people are constantly complaining of low construction quality, lack of Internet and telephone communications, substandard infrastructure, low wages, etc.
The BRSM was created by Aliaksandr Lukashenka on 6 September 2002, being considered the legal successor of Leninist Communist Youth Union of Belarus (the Komsomol branch in the Byelorussian SSR). The UN contends in a report released in early 2003 that the BRSM will mostly be used by President Lukashenko as a tool to recruit officials into his government.
