Siarhei Kavalenka forced to seek pardon

Siarhei Kavalenka filed a petition for pardon addressed to Aliaksandr Lukashenka under the colony administration’s pressure, his wife told reporters after her three-day visit to Mahiliou penal colony №13.
“They promised that he would have come back home by July 3. He wrote to the president one line and a half: «I ask you to release me»,” she said.
According to her, Siarhei was mostly pressurized during his stay in a disciplinary cell for alleged violation of service order. “There were very poor conditions: the roof leaked, the window was broken, and when it was raining water flew into the cell. To avoid freezing he had to get up and do exercises 5-6 times a night. It was the time when he was visited several times a day and required to lodge a petition for pardon. They wanted him to state that he had performed a petty crime although in reality it had been a political action,” Alena Kavalenka said.
The woman has no idea when her husband will be freed. “He has had six «violations» of service order for this time. They have done their best to prevent him being amnestied due to his status of «flagrant violator»,” she stressed.
Nevertheless, Alena Kavalenka hopes for seeing her husband son: “We want him to be at large. I believe society needs him as well.” Siarhei Kavalenka has not backslidden and has no regrets, she said.
