Legal executives in Ales Bialiatski’s flat


On May 30, 2012 executives distrained property in Minsk office of unregistered human rights centre “Viasna”.
The flat where the centre has been housed since 2000 belongs to FIDH Vice President Ales Bialiatski, Head of the centre. In November 2011 court found him guilty of for alleged large-scale tax evasion and sentenced to to 4.5-year confinement in a medium security penal colony and confiscation of property.
On May 28, 2012 legal executives were about to distrain Viasna’s property but having seen journalists nearby they did not dare to enter the flat.
On May 30, 2012 in the presence of Natallia Pinchuk, the wife of Ales Bialiatski, three executives destrained the Centre’s property, which is valued at Br 16 mln (appr. $2000) at a rough estimate. Now the court should fix which articles from the distrained property belong to the human rights defender.
