First Belarusian youth series to be censored

Unfortunately, youth series «Above the Sky» might not make it through to the viewership. According to its creators, the cause is to be sought in censorship.

The realization of «Above the Sky» was subsidized by the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (the UNO). A number of well-known Belarusians acted in the film: musicians Vinsent, Aliaksandr Kulinkovich, Aleh Khamenka, biathlonist Darya Domrachava. Using two languages (Belarusian and Russian) became one of the film’s snaps.

«After the wrap the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) thanked me for the work, Antonius Broek, UNDP Resident Representative in the Republic of Belarus. shook my hand, but later the film crew turned out to have been suspended from further duty, » Andrey Kureychik, a film scenario writer and creative producer, told Belsat TV.

«The series appears to be uncompromising. Realizing that we stood the only chance of making an independent picture about the Belarusian youth’s life, we created a fair project. It looks more tough that the scenario provided. Belteleradiocompany, a state-owned channel, was to show the movie, and there is every likelihood that the channel representatives have not given permit to broadcast our version of the film,» the scenario writer notes.

«The UNDP possesses property rights to the footage of “Above the Sky”, but non-property (creative) rights of authors (scenario writer, editor, composer) are reserved. If there is an attempt to mangle the piece of screen, we will apply for defence [in court – Belsat]. But it is hoped that UNDP officials will make a proper decision,» Andrey Kureychik said.
