Dissidents sentenced for a rally in solidarity with political prisoners

Four dissidents were arrested and sentenced by the Central District Court in Minsk for participating in a rally in solidarity with the political prisoners, organized yesterday by European Belarus.

Aleksander Saldatsyenka and Aleh Rakhowsky were sentenced to seven days of detention. Siarhej Kazakow, who was just recently released from prison, was sentenced now to 10 days of detention. The court also ordered Halina Naddubnik to pay 700 thousand rubles fine (around 90 euro).

All the detainees were convicted of violating the rules of organizing mass events – Nasta Lojka, a human rights defender told Belsat. She also informed that all defendants will appeal their sentences.

Ms. Lojka added that the court staff hampered human rights activists’ access to the trial by misinforming them. They wouldn’t say where the court hearing would be held and maintained that the dissidents were already sentenced (although the process had not started yet at that time). Due to deliberate misinformation, one of the lawyers has not made it to the court hearing of his client.
