Nadzieya Yermakova: IMF wants us to release political prisoners, but they don’t want to leave

Mr. Yermakova, head of the National Bank in Belarus, during a press conference informed that some members of the IMF board of directors demanded that political conditions are met in exchange for a loan. „An IMF credit might not be possible, because even if meet 100% of economic demands, there are still political expectations“. In her opinion, the Fund is straightforward about their demands. „It’s not like the National Bank made it up, it is an official information, that we have to release political prisoners, but they don’t want to leave [from prisons].“

Mr. Yermakova also stressed that the last IMF fact-finding mission to Belarus gave a positive feedback to the recent moves by the government and the National Bank.
