Investigation into Minsk metro attack continues

Scheduled end of the investigation into a bomb explosion in Minsk metro was postponed, informed the Belarusian Prosecutor General’s office. However, it was confirmed that the investigation entered its final stages.

Alekh Volchak, a human rights defender, commented that it is quite usual in Belarus that investigations into complicated issues often linger. On the other hand, in his opinion this case is very mysterious and lawyers might have hard time commenting on the recent decision of the authorities.

Volchak stressed that the authorities decided to keep the entire investigation classified, because numerous officials excessively commented on it in media right after the attack. – The various official versions were contradictory. And that’s why they decided it will better to stop informing the public opinion all together. – he added.

On April 11th, at the Oktyabrskaya metro station a bomb exploded, killing 15 and injuring more than 200 people. On April 29th, the prosecution presented charges against two inhabitants of Vitebsk. One of them is also a suspect in two other attacks in 2005 and 2008. Belarusian president confirmed that the suspects already plead guilty.

There still many unclear issues in the case. President Lukashenka, after the 2008 bomb attack, claimed that the perpetrator was arrested.
