On Kissinger's track: Belarus President to reconcile Ukraine with Russia

Aiming at defusing a deepening crisis in Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko expressed a wish to make Belarus a mediation venue. A telephone talk initiated by the Ukrainian side was held on Tuesday, the Belarusian President’s press service told news agency BelTA.

‘The President of Ukraine addressed the head of the Belarusian state and asked him to make the Republic of Belarus a conference venue on solving the Ukrainian crisis with participation of all the parties concerned. Aliaksandr Lukashenka has given his consent,’ the presidential press service states.

The Belarusian authorities aspire to suck advantage out of the Russo-Ukrainian conflict, acting as a mediator in the Russo-Ukrainian cooperation in the military-industrial sphere, experts say.

At the same time, on May, 15 Mr Lukashenka told Ukraine’s envoy Mykhailo Yezhel that he would never agree to take the role of intermediary between Kyiv and Moscow. ‘Mediation is excluded, I hate mediation,’ he noted.
