Merkel to Poroshenko: Germany’s call to direct talks with terrorists was ‘misinterpretation’


German Chancellor Angela Merkel says of misinterpretation of statements the representative of the German government made about the direct talks with the militants.

She announced this during a telephone consultation with President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko, the press service of the head of state says.

The leaders discussed ways to organize a meeting of the contact group (on Ukraine), in particular, in the format of a video conference, and expressed confidence that the event will be organized tomorrow, censor.net.ua reports.

In this regard, the Chancellor emphasized the misinterpretation of statements the representative of the Federal Government made about the direct talks with the separatists and expressed its commitment to the tripartite consultation contact group.

The sides discussed involvement of the OSCE mission in monitoring and verification of the border. The talk is about placing OSCE inspectors on the Ukrainian-Russian border including the Russian border-crossing points Donetsk and Gukovo as well as about the possibility of using drones for monitoring and verification.

Poroshenko and Merkel discussed preparation for consideration of Ukrainian problems at a meeting of the European Council on July 16 in Brussels.

Earlier, the press service of the Government of Germany reported that the Chancellor supported direct negotiations with terrorists.
