Stephen Fry: Another Chernobyl?! No thanks!

The well-known British actor, writer and activist calls to stop construction of the nuclear plant in Belarus.

‘Another Chernobyl?! No thanks! Join me – sign petition to block dodgy new nuclear plant in Belarus,’ he said on his Twitter account.

‘Stop the construction of the Nuclear Power Plant at Ostraviets [Astravets], and revise all related decisions violating provisions of Espoo Convention and Aarhaus Convention, and basic environmental rights of European citizens,’ the petition addressed to the EU bodies is posted on change.org.

The construction of two nuclear reactors for the plant located in Astravets is provided in the agreement reached by Belarus and Russia, the reactors being supplied by Atomstroyexport. The project faced opposition at home and abroad on both safety and political grounds. The Belarusian power plant is supposed to be built in Astravets district, in Hrodna region, 250 kilometers from Polish border and 50 kilometers from Vilnius. The Lithuanian government has protested the project because of its proximity to the capital city.
