On May, 25 Petro Poroshenko, the leader of the presidential race in Ukraine, told a journalist of kp.by about prospects for Belarus-Ukraine relations.
‘Belarus is our years-long partner. I believe we will be able to take a step towards further widening co-operation. I am well-aqcuainted with the Belarusian President. I had the opportunity to meet with him when I was Ukraine’s Foreign Minister. We signed the agreement on borders together. Our current relations are promising,’ he said.
Being asked whether Aliaksandr Lukashenka may have him for a friend, Mr Poroshenko answered: ‘I think earlier he regarded me as a friend as well. It is crucial we could see after our peoples’ interests, the interests of Belarusians and Ukrainians. Democracy is yet to be developed in belarus and Ukraine. I believe we should improve Belarus’s eurointegration, The Eastern Partnership was founded to for it. Unfortunately, its activity has recently been degraded, I do not rule out that this project should be resumed soon.’
