Ukraine's Turchinov fails to meet with EU politicians due to tensions

Speakers of European parliaments – nearly 50 delegations from 33 countries arrevied in Lithuania on April 7. Oleksandr Turchinov, Ukraine’s acting president, was expected to be one of the main guests, but his visit was cancelled due to the escalation of conflicts in the country.

The representatives of the EU member countries were eager to get information firsthand and express their solidarity with the Ukrainian people. The participants reasserted their firm stance on supporting the sovereignnty of Ukraine and condemning Russia’s military intervention. Lithuania recommends the EU to immediately provide financial aid to Ukraine.

Loreta Graužinienė, Chairperson to the Lithuanian parliament, expressed regrets at Mr Turchinov’s not being able to turn up and stressed that Europeans wanted a discussion with the ruler of Ukraine. That is why Mr Turchinov participated in the event via telebridge.

The bloc reiterated their being at one with Ukraine both in the times of Maidan and in the course of the annexation of the Crimea. But these actions are not effective enough: it is highye likely that Mr Putin gives little weight to warnings.
