Developing new markets: Foreign Minister opens Belarus tractor assembling plant in Cambodia

Uladzimir Makey started the first ever official visit in the history of bilateral diplomatic relations to Cambodia, the press office for the Ministry of Foreiign Affairs reports.

On March, 27 the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus and the Minister of Industry and Crafts of Cambodia opened the first in Southeast Asia tractor assembling plant. The new joint project provides for the annual deliveries of more than 400 Belarusian tractors to Cambodia and neighbouring countries.

After the opening ceremony the participants familiarized themselves with the functioning of the assembly line. The Cambodian Minister personally tested the first tractor “Belarus” assembled in Cambodia

The parties also discussed the state and prospects of Belarus-Cambodia cooperation in the political, trade, economic and humanitarian sphere. The sides considered the issues of interaction in the banking and financial sphere, the creation of assembly plants, implementation of joint bilateral projects.

Cambodia, officially known as the Kingdom of Cambodia and once known as the Khmer Empire is a low income economy with the agriculture sector dominating the country’s economy, followed by the service and industrial sectors.

Apparently, president Lukashenka’s time-proof maneuvering between Russia and the EU no longer works. The Belarusian authorities crave for expanding the narrowed range of his international contacts and finding new markets: for example, in March 2013 the president unexpectedly made official visits to a number of countries in South-East Asia and the Middle East. Even Belarusian envoys and diplomats abroad are asked to sell Belarusian goods in their countries.
