Californians send $1600 to family of Belarusian killed on Maidan, Belarusbank refuses to give money out

Mikhail Zhyzneuski’s mother so far has not been able to receive funds transferred to her by anonymous sympathizers in the United States. Nina Zhyzneuskaya visited Belarusbank’s office but was told that she could not get the Western Union transfer because she did not have information about the payer.

“I got a phone call from California earlier this month,” she said. “The callers introduced themselves as representatives of the Ukrainian community in the USA. They promised to send me money for my treatment. I suffered a massive heart attack soon after my son’s death. The money has arrived but I cannot get it.” The woman asked the donors to provide the necessary information to her.

Every penny counts in their family, Mrs Zhyzneuskaya says. She has to spend pension (appr. $200 per month) on medicines. Her husband’s pension payment is much the same; the 68-year-old pensioner has to look for side jobs.

Some patients who were in hospitals were scolding Mrs Zhyzneuskaya. “Some said I was swine and whore, that I was a kind of a public enemy because Misha was killed in Ukraine. But other people were sticking up for me saying “Shame on you, you are women and have children! She’s a human being and her son is a human being. We are all in God’s hands. Today her heart is torn by grief, tomorrow it may happen to everyone”.
