Lenin statue toppled in Kyiv (photos, video)

Anti-government protesters dragged down and decapitated a statue of Bolshevik leader and Soviet state founder Vladimir Lenin in the capital of Ukraine and attacked it with hammers on Sunday.

Protesters took turns beating on the torso of the fallen statue, while others chanted ‘Glory to Ukraine!’

A week ago hundreds of thousands occupied a central square, expressing their outrage against Yanukovych’s decision not to sign an association agreement with the European Union.

The protests have an anti-Russian component because aiming at derailing the EU deal Russia threathened with trade retaliation against Ukraine.
