93 years ago the Slutsk brigade started fighting against the Red Army not far from the town of Slutsk (Minsk region) to defend the independence of Belarus. Unfortunately, the Slutsk defence action, or the Slutsk uprising, met with failure. The current authorities are trying to conceal and mispresent these crucial events but indifferent Belarusians do their best to put the historical record straight.
The Belarusian National Remembrance, a Warsaw-based NGO, has come up with the proposal to light canldles to pay the tribute to the memory of the defence action’s participants. Today is National Heroes’ Day, but regrettably, it is not officially recognised.
