Belarusian journalist chosen international writer of courage

Iryna Khalip, the wife of ex-presidential candidate Andrey Sannikau, has received a prestigious British award.

It is Sir Tom Stoppard, a well-known British playwright, who won the 2013 Pen Pinter Prize, but he chose Mrs Khalip, a correspondent of Russia’s Novaya Gazeta, as the recipient of this year’s Writer of Courage Award.

On October 8, 2013 Sir Tom who had started his carreer as a journalist said he was “proud to share the prize with a brave reporter”.

The Pen Pinter Prize was established in 2009 in memory of playwright Harold Pinter, a 2005 Nobel Prize Laureate. The Prize is awarded annually to a British writer or a writer resident in Britain of outstanding literary merit who, in the words of Harold Pinter’s Nobel speech, casts an ‘unflinching, unswerving’ gaze upon the world, and shows a ‘fierce intellectual determination … to define the real truth of our lives and our societies’.
