Activist fined for picket in memory of abducted journalist

Tatsiana Palulekh, a judge of Soviet district court in Minsk, fined Pavel Prakapovich for unsanctioned single-person picketing, baj.by reports.

The picketer wanted to draw public attention to the abduction of cameraman Dzmitry Zavadski which allegedly took place 13 years ago, on July 7, 2000.

On the evening of July 7, 2013 Pavel Prakapovich went out to Yakub Kolas Square holding a portrait of the journalist in his hands. Later he was detained and taken to Minsk detention centre (‘Akrestsina’); he managed to inform his associates of the detention the following day.

In court Mr Prakapovich admitted being on the picket but stressed that he had not violated the public order, but expressed his opinion. He was found guilty of organising an unauthorized mass event (art. 23.34 of the Administrative Code) and fined to 25 basic amounts (appr. 230 euro).
