When compared to its eastern neighbour, Belarus does stand a better chance of becoming a free country, the Russian oppositionist believes.
Belarusian United Civic Party (UCP) and the Republican Party of Russia – People’s Freedom Party (RPR-PARNAS) signed a statement on cooperation in Minsk on April 24. UCP Chairman Anatol Liabedzka and RPR-PARNAS co-chairman Boris Nemtsov declared that their parties aim at returning the two countries to democracy.
According to Mr Nemtsov, “Putin’s Russia is following Lukashenka’s path at a pace to be envied”. “If your country becomes free Russia’s chances will improve as well. Being situated in the centre of Europe and not having “the Caucasian aspect”, you stand a stronger chance of being democratized because Russia has an imperious attitude of mind,” the politician stressed.
Lukashenka and Putin might hate each other but they are very much alike, Mr Nemtsov said. “What unites them is fraud because the both are duping their people,” he made a guess.
Today Mr Nemtsov is going to discuss Belarusian-Russian relations at a meeting at the Minsk office of the Belarusian People’s Front.
