Professor Shved: “My dismissal is politically motivated”

Viachaslau Shved sent an open letter to his former colleagues from Hrodna University: yesterday the University Council did not appoint him to a professorial position. It should be noted that only three years are left before his reaching retirement.

“Having studied my work for the last five years the commission unanimously resolved to recommend me as a candidate for the participation in the competition. On April 1 the voting took place during the sittings of the University Council. Its result (30 – for, 41 – against) are obviously rigged. The people who know me well coud not vote in such a way,” the historian stresses in his open letter.

It has become known that before the University Council’s last sittings notorious Siamion Shapira, Head of Hrodna Executive Committee, paid a call on the university’s higher management. That is why his dismissal may be a political decision and retaliation for disfavoured textbook “Hrodna Studies”.

“I collected the team of authors and guided in its work; I wrote more than half of the book and edited it. The book was done at the request of Hrodna teachers who were running elective course Hrodna Studies,” Shved said.

A year ago Viachaslau Shved was awarded a medal “For Merits to the Hrodna State University named after Yanka Kupala” where the historian has worked more than 30 years. He published 4 monographs, 10 books, 5 study guides.

“I would like to clarify my position and I want you to know that I’ve always worked resting on historical evidence. That is why among the colleagues I have won the recognition as a serious and honest hisorian,” he wrote.
