Activist urges Belarusians to sign petition for recognizing white-red-white flag cultural treasure


The activists of opposition organization Young Front are collecting signatures under a petition on granting the status of non-material historical and cultural value to the white-red-white flag.

Zmitser Dashkevich, one of Young Front leaders, is about to hold a festive action of signing the petition on October 1 near Minsk City hall. Public figures and prominent cultutal workers of Belarus will be present at the event, he said on Facebook.

If one cannot come, they can sign the petition on the Internet.

The campaign was announced on 19 September after the action devoted to the national symbols of Belarusians in Minsk.

On September 24, Dashkevich who was collecting signatures was detained by Minsk police.

Famous Belarusian actor and director Pavel Harlanchuk was the first to sign the petition to the Ministry of Culture. A lot of reputed Belarusians are also among the signatories.

On 19 September 1991, the white-red-white flag and emplem Pahonya (Pursuit) was officially recognized state symbols of the Republic of Belarus. Such resolution was passed by the Supreme Soviet of the 12th convocation after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

But after the 1995 referendum, they were replaced by those reminiscent of Soviet symbolism.
